Pasture, Rangeland, & Forage (PRF) Insurance

The Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage insurance program was introduced in 2007 and has recently expanded to selected states throughout the nation. There are two policy provisions, Rainfall Index and Vegetative Index. The Rainfall Index plan is available throughout most of the southeast region. This plan is designed to help grazing and hay land operations offset cost and/or loss incurred during times of drought. The flexibility of the plan allows the producer to select the amount of acreage to insure and the time periods critical to their operation. Multi Peril Crop Insurance

Multiple Peril Crop Insurance (MPCI) provides comprehensive protection against weather-related causes of loss and certain other unavoidable perils. Coverage is available on many crops in primary production areas throughout the U.S. at 50 to 75 percent of the actual production history (APH) for the farm. Coverage levels of 80 and 85 percent are available for some crops if indicated on the actuarial documents for the county. An indemnity price election from 55 to 100 percent of the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation expected market price (when available on the crop) is selected at the time of purchase. Minimum Catastrophic Risk Protection (CAT) coverage is available for an administrative fee of only $300 per crop per county. MPCI coverage provides protection against low yields and poor quality as well as prevented planting, late planting, and replanting costs for most crops.

Hail Insurance

Hail insurance is private coverage purchased on crops with dollars-per-acre coverage to protect against hail and fire losses. Many companies also cover transit losses, lightning, vandalism, etc. Grain storage is in many hail contracts which can supplement or replace similar coverage in a farm owners policy.
